My fall movie preview!
So the summer movie season is over. September, the movie month of limbo, came and went with nothing to show for itself, other then the ridiculously enjoyable Shoot Em' Up. And now we enter, the fall movie season, where Hollywood pulls down it's pants, pulls out a penis, bends over and sucks itself off with prestigious movies. Aside the gay cowboy eating pudding mumbo jumbo, I have picked up the scent of a few films that may just be worth a damn! Here is my list, of the top films I give a shit about coming out this fall:
30 Days of Night - It's about this small town in Alaska where the sun doesn't rise for 30 days. During which time, a group of vampires decides this is a fantastic opportunity to have a buffet and runs rampant across the town, killing everyone in sight. Josh Hartnet plays the town sheriff, trying to keep himself and what few survivors are in hiding alive for the month. I just got finished reading the book this is based on. It's very cool, great story, great premise, and well executed. A little short though, but the movie looks to have fleshed out the story. What I like best about it is the nature of the vampires. These aren't romanticized Ann Rice faggypires or brain dead creatures. They are basically humanoid cannibals with razor sharp teeth. Very vicious and damn near indestructible. It really makes the characters situation completely hopeless. If done correctly, this should be a fantastic little B movie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Lw1cPHPC4American Gangster - Directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington. Denzel plays a man who rises to immense power in the drug trade and Russell plays the cop trying to bring him down. It's sort of looks like a mix of Catch Me If You Can and The Departed. The talent involved in this makes it worth watching. And the trailer looks phenomenal. Look for yourself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOSOYSLDuQENo Country For Old Men - Josh Brolin stars as a man who finds the aftermath of a drug deal god terribly bad. Amongst the dead bodies he finds a case filled with 2 million dollars. He takes it. Both sides of the awry drug deal go after him One person in particular, played by Javier Barde, uses a cattlegun to kill everyone he crosses in his pursuit of Brolin's character. Tommy Lee Jones also stars as the town sheriff, trying to piece it all together. Directed by the Coen Brothers, who can make some fantastic shit when they are on their A game. It's based on a book, which I have just purchased, and will begin reading now. Looks like insanity!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMPCLxOzwC0Hitman - Based on the video game. Looks like it might be a fun little action B movie. But video game movies are ridiculously tricky and often tend to suck ass. Hopefully this one is more like Silent Hill and less like Doom in terms of being shit or not.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBMVYgmFs9oBeowulf - Robert Zemeckis directs this adaptation of the old poem I'm sure most of you were forced to read somewhere in high school. He filmed this using the same motion capture technology he used in The Polar Express. Looks fascinating, and the visuals are really stunning. If it's half as good as 300, then it will be worth the money:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9qpqyO_dmUThe Mist - And behold the film I want to see THE MOST this fall. Based on a short story by Stephen King. Directed by Frank Darabont, the man responsible for the Shawkshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Two of the best films ever, and two films also based on King short stories. The book this one is based on is excellent too. About a group of people trapped inside a supermarket as a mysterious mist appears from out of nowhere. Inside the mist are things best left unseen and undescribed, ready to chomp them all down. And as if that weren't enough, a religious nut starts going insane and taking people with her. So which horror is worse, then outside? Or that inside? It looks outstanding. I really hope it is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP-MHO_M6ikI Am Legend - Will Smith plays the sole survivor of a plague that has seemingly wiped out the human race. Or so he thinks...For those unfamiliar with the story, I will say no more. This should be excellent. I'll probably read this book before the movie comes out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKoAR9JaMp8Sweeny Todd - Tim Burton directing an ultra violent R rated musical? Johnny Depp as a homicidal barber? I'm there! Depp plays a man falsely imprisoned, who upon his release vows revenge on those who have wronged him. He opens up his own barber shop, and begins slaughtering those who do him wrong. Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen also star. The people involved in this alone damn near guarantee something fascinating to see. And the trailer looks brilliant. Check it out. This is going to be on A LOT of must see lists.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui1WAZgwkxYAVP: Requiem - I should NOT be excited for this. It should NOT looks interesting. I should be kicking things because this exists. And yet, it looks.........AMAZING! They did the smartest thing they could possibly do with this film: eradicate any involvement of that hack Paul "What Script" Anderson. He has NOTHING to do with this. In fact, it acts as if the first film NEVER EVEN HAPPENED! This movie looks like EXACTLY what the first one SHOULD have been in the fucking first place! Predator ship crashes on earth in a rural town, and two face hugger specimens he was carrying escape. Death and destruction ensue. This one is rated R and doesn't skim on the gore. The Predator, isn't a pussy and teams up with a black chick like he did in the first one. No he just kills everything he sees. The aliens are their typical horrendous selves. This really just looks like it made the film we wanted to see to begin with. So i'm fucking there and it better fucking deliver this time! It's telling that the trailer alone is better then the ENTIRE first film:
